OpenAI Sued Over Failure to Warn Police Before Tumbler Ridge Mass Shooting

OpenAI is facing a new lawsuit alleging the company failed to warn police after ChatGPT was linked to one of Canada’s deadliest school shootings. The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in federal court in Northern California by an unnamed 12-year-old minor identified as M.G. and her mother, Cia Edmonds, against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and several OpenAI entities.

The case stems from a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, in February. Authorities say 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed her mother and 11-year-old stepbrother at home before going to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and opening fire. Five children and one educator were killed at the school before Van Rootselaar died by suicide.

According to the lawsuit, OpenAI’s automated systems flagged Van Rootselaar’s ChatGPT account in June 2025 for conversations involving gun violence and planning. Members of OpenAI’s specialized safety team reviewed the chats and determined the user posed a credible and specific threat, recommending that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police be notified.

The lawsuit alleges OpenAI leaders overruled internal recommendations to alert authorities, deactivated Van Rootselaar’s account without notifying police, and allowed her to return by creating a new account with a different email address.

Bitcoin, Ethereum Dip as Fed Holds Rates Steady for Third Straight Time

The Federal Reserve continued to hold its benchmark interest rate steady on Wednesday, maintaining a cautious stance following the conclusion of what is widely expected to be Jerome Powell’s final FOMC meeting as chair.

The Federal Open Market Committee kept the central bank’s benchmark rate pinned at a target range of 3.5% to 3.75%, marking the third time this year that the group has hit the brakes on policy shifts as conflict in the Middle East threatens the global economy.

The Fed’s decision was anticipated. Meanwhile, Bitcoin and Ethereum changed hands around $75,100 and $2,240, with both dipping following the announcement to accelerate losses over the past day. Bitcoin is now down 1.4% in the last 24 hours, while Ethereum has fallen 2.3%.

Earlier in the day, the Senate Banking Committee advanced Kevin Warsh’s nomination to succeed Powell, whose eight-year tenure at the Fed’s helm expires next month. The procedural vote sent Warsh’s nomination to the full Senate, where Republicans hold a majority.

Powell has indicated that he would serve as “chair pro tempore” if Warsh isn’t confirmed by May 15, aiming to maintain an orderly transition for the leadership position.

Mental Strength in the Moment with Amy Morin

You're about to give a speech. Your hands are shaking. Your throat is closing up. Amy Morin's advice? Smell the pizza. Breathe in through your nose like you're smelling a slice. Hold it. Exhale through your mouth like you're cooling it off.

Sounds ridiculous. Works anyway. Amy Morin taught me that – and a lot more – during my latest podcast on The James Altucher Show.

Amy is a therapist. She also lives in a sailboat. She’s also written more bestsellers than most people have read. Now she’s about to release her latest book, The Mental Strength Playbook, out April 28th. We talked all about it. And she just gave me some of her BEST tips for managing stress, anxiety, and the 3 AM panic spirals.

Amy's gift is that she takes the soft mushy stuff – anxiety, commitment, mental strength – and turns it into actual moves you can run. Plays. Like a quarterback flipping through a playbook on the sideline.
