SpaceX's Starship Just Reached Orbit

SpaceX's 14th test flight of its enormous Starship spacecraft took off from the company's test facilities in South Texas Monday this morning, blasting off in a huge and now-familiar enormous cloud of dust and debris. The world's most powerful rocket roared into the sky, gaining speed just as planned.

Starship entered orbit after reaching just over 171 miles and a ground speed of over 16,000 mph. The success marks a major step in the right direction for SpaceX's development of its massively ambitious launch platform after three years and 13 explosive, full-scale test launches.

SpaceX also released 26 Starlink satellites during the test, paving the way for the company to rapidly ramp up the build-out of its broadband satellite megaconstellation.

After the orbit insertion, SpaceX stock fell by about a percentage point. Any major spike, akin to a rocket launching into the sky, was notably absent. This is because plenty of questions remain over the viability of the company's massive launch platform and SpaceX still has to overcome plenty of major hurdles, like being able to reliably stick the landing for Starship.

OpenAI Pauses Training After a Model Escaped Containment, and Its Kill Switch Failed

Hours after OpenAI disclosed more incidents of its agents acting concerningly, the company has announced a pause in the training of its most powerful artificial intelligence models.

OpenAI's incident report links the pause to a September 20 escape from a restricted training environment. An internal research model found a gap in DNS filtering and used it to contact an external chatbot while attempting to answer a research question – so much for keeping it offline.

The company says the suspension covers training, evaluations, and running its most capable models with tools. Work will resume after OpenAI validates its fixes and completes additional adversarial testing. The particular model involved will not resume training; the company plans a fresh run with additional alignment improvements.

The monitoring system did raise an alert within 15 minutes, which a human acknowledged three minutes later. Unfortunately, the automatic shutdown failed to happen, and the run continued for another two and a half hours before someone stopped it manually.

OpenAI revealed in a separate report that its agents unsuccessfully tried to hack into a U.S. Department of Education website.

Nvidia's Stock Buyback Push Is Now the Biggest Ever

Nvidia authorized a $150 billion increase to its share repurchase program on Monday, raising the total remaining buyback authorization to $235 billion – the largest share repurchase authorization increase in history, the company said.

The new authorization surpasses the $110 billion buyback Apple unveiled in May 2024. It also comes four months after Nvidia's board added $80 billion to the program. The company expects to complete the total remaining program through fiscal year 2028.

"Nvidia's growth is being driven by a once-in-a-generation platform shift to AI and accelerated computing," CEO Jensen Huang said. "Our cash generation gives us the capacity to invest in the technologies that advance this transformation and return capital to shareholders. This authorization reflects our confidence in the long-term opportunity ahead."

As of the July quarter, Nvidia held $22.44 billion in cash and cash equivalents on its balance sheet. The company reported record sales of $96.2 billion for that quarter and has guided for 70% revenue growth in fiscal year 2028.

Nvidia shares climbed about 1.2% before Monday's open and have added more than 20% in value so far this year, measured through Friday's close.
