Nuclear Moon

Ray Blanco:

China-Russia Nuclear Reactor for Moon Base To Begin Construction in 2028

China is considering building a nuclear power plant on the Moon to supply energy to the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), a project it is developing with Russia. The plan was revealed by Pei Zhaoyu, chief engineer of the Chang’e-8 mission, during a presentation on Wednesday.

The Chang’e-8 mission, set to launch in 2028, is a key step in China’s space ambitions. It will help prepare for a permanently staffed lunar base by 2030 and explore how to generate energy on the Moon.

While China and Russia push ahead with the ILRS, the U.S. is working on its return to the Moon through NASA’s Artemis program. NASA aims to land two astronauts on the lunar surface again in 2027, then construct a sustainable moon base.

NASA’s power plans for its base include deploying large solar arrays on the lunar surface. The energy will then be distributed across the base using an extensive network of pipelines and cables. Despite its lunar experience, the U.S. is also exploring nuclear power for the Moon amid a global race for energy independence in space.

Faraday-Caged Drone Triggers and Directs Lightning Strikes

In a world first, Japanese researchers flew a lightning-proof drone in a thunderstorm, using it to induce and direct natural lightning strikes. The team is now working on how this flying lightning rod might capture and store lightning energy.

There's a decent bit of energy in the average lightning strike, as you might expect; Real Clear Science estimates about a billion joules. That translates to around 278 kilowatt-hours, or enough to charge a standard Hyundai Ioniq 6 nearly six times over.

Furthermore, there are around 1.4 billion lightning strikes every year globally, or about 44 every second, representing some 383.6 terawatt-hours of electricity flashing out of the sky for free. That's nearly 1.5% of global electricity consumption (at 2023 levels) – and quite a decent resource if we could capture it.

The researchers hope their new drones will lead to the development of a system that can not only be deployed to protect cities and infrastructure from lightning strikes, but also to bottle up energy from strikes for our usage.
