Musk's Freight Beast Hits the Road

What We Know About Tesla’s Semi Truck As Production Nears

Tesla’s long-awaited Semi trucks are back in the spotlight. The Wall Street Journal reports that truck drivers testing prototype models are enthusiastic – and the rest of us may not have to wait much longer.

The company is expected to begin producing and shipping the electric freight trucks, which feature driver-assistance technology, from its northern Nevada factory this summer. The Journal, citing Tigress Financial Partners, estimates Tesla could produce between 5,000 and 15,000 trucks in 2026, eventually ramping up to 50,000 annually.

The Journal also reports that the trucks cost under $300,000, or about twice as much as a regular diesel truck. The Semi comes in two versions: one with a 325-mile range and another with a 500-mile range, or about double that of some competing electric big rigs.

A fully loaded Semi can go from 0 to 60 mph in about 20 seconds. One driver told the Journal he was able to haul a 25,000-pound load up a mountain pass with ease.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Enters the Space Data Center Game
Blue Origin, the space conglomerate founded by Amazon chair Jeff Bezos, has asked the U.S. government for permission to launch a network of more than 50,000 satellites that will act as a data center in orbit.

In a March 19 document filed with the Federal Communications Commission, Blue Origin’s attorneys described “Project Sunrise” as a network of spacecraft that will perform advanced computation in orbit to “ease mounting pressure on U.S. communities and natural resources by shifting energy – and water-intensive compute away from terrestrial data centers.”

It is costly to launch data centers into orbit, and most companies competing in the nascent industry are betting that the price of reaching orbit will fall due to SpaceX’s Starship rocket, which is still under development and may see its first 2026 launch next month.

This is an area where Blue Origin may have an advantage: Its New Glenn rocket, which first flew last year, is one of the most powerful operational launch vehicles on Earth. If the company can start flying and reusing them at a regular pace, Blue Origin could see the same kind of benefits from vertical integration that allowed SpaceX to dominate space telecommunications with its Starlink network.

South Korean Firm Unveils Robotic Hand With Human-Scale Dexterity at Under 2 Lb
South Korea-based Tesollo, which develops dexterous robotic hands and grippers, has introduced a compact five-finger robotic hand designed for humanoid and industrial systems.

Dubbed DG-5F-S, the hand features 20 degrees of freedom (DoF) and is designed to replicate human-like articulation. It measures 21 cm and features high dexterity. Despite its complex internal mechanics, the hand remains remarkably lightweight at just 880 g (1.94 lb).

A standout feature is its backdrivable joints. It provides the mechanical compliance necessary for the robot to interact safely with its environment and absorb external impacts without damage.

The stakes are high for Tesollo and other robotic hands developers. As companies like Tesla and Figure push for general-purpose humanoids, the hand has become the most important – and expensive – component of the bill of materials.

Reportedly, the global market for humanoid five-finger robotic hands could reach $876 million by 2030. The ultimate goal is simple: kill off the era of the awkward gripper and replace it with hands that can feel, adapt, and handle objects with true responsive intelligence.
