Musk vs. Altman: Trial Week

Chris Campbell:

Musk v. Altman Heads to Court Next Week. Here’s What’s at Stake

A yearslong legal brawl between Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman heads to court in Northern California on Monday in a dramatic showdown between two of the most high-profile names in the tech industry.

In his $134 billion lawsuit, Musk claimed that OpenAI, Altman and the company’s president, Greg Brockman, reneged on a vow they made to keep the artificial intelligence lab a nonprofit in perpetuity. OpenAI has since restructured so that it can operate a for-profit subsidiary, and it’s now valued at over $850 billion.

Musk and Altman were once close friends, and were among a group of techies who founded OpenAI in 2015 out of a shared concern over the potential power of AI and the need to advance it in ways that would benefit humanity.

Now they’re public enemies and bitter rivals, with Musk having started xAI as an OpenAI competitor in 2023 and recently merging it with SpaceX in a deal valuing the combined entity at $1.25 trillion.

The trial lands as Musk is preparing to take SpaceX public in what will likely be a record IPO, and as OpenAI gears up for a potential public offering later this year.

Peter Diamandis Warns of the Emotional Pandemic – The 5 Forks That Will Split Humanity

"If that's the future that you see, why would you ever want to live there?"

That's Peter Diamandis. On my show. This week.

Peter founded the XPRIZE. Co-founded Singularity University with Ray Kurzweil. Wrote Abundance. His new book – We Are As Gods – dropped this week.

I've had him on the show 10 times. This one might be my favorite. Not because I agree with everything he says, but because his vision of the future is so bold.

Peter thinks the next pandemic is coming. But it’s not viral. It’s emotional. A pandemic of fear. Fear about jobs. Fear about AI. Fear shaped by a decade of Hollywood dystopia. Terminator. Black Mirror. Ex Machina.

So Peter's doing something about it. He launched the Future Vision XPRIZE with Rod Roddenberry, son of Gene Roddenbery – the guy who created Star Trek. $15 million to fund a hopeful, Star Trek-style film. Give people a more optimistic target to aim at.

I pushed Peter on the fear thing. Peter's response included three key insights…

But that's not all: We also talked about the coming economics of AI and some big choices coming to all of us in the next 10-20 years.

Meta Agrees to Deploy Millions of Amazon AI Chips in Deal Worth Billions

Social media giant Meta signed an agreement with Amazon Web Services to deploy tens of millions of Graviton5 processors for its next-generation AI infrastructure, making the company one of AWS's largest Graviton customers globally.

The partnership spans three to five years and will be worth billions of dollars, AWS Vice President Nafea Bshara said. Meta will deploy Amazon’s fifth-generation CPU processors, which are purpose-built for agentic AI workloads – applications that can reason, generate code, and orchestrate multi-step tasks independently.

Each Graviton5 chip contains 192 cores that can be assigned to different tasks simultaneously, enabling parallel processing for complex AI workflows.

The deal underscores how major technology companies are expanding beyond graphics processors that have dominated AI model training. As AI applications mature from research to production, companies increasingly need CPUs optimized for running trained models efficiently.

The deal comes one day after Meta, the parent company behind Facebook and Instagram, confirmed reports of mass layoffs, with 8,000 jobs to be cut and 6,000 open positions to remain unfilled. The shift comes as Meta increasingly positions AI as its north star and attempts to compete with powerful rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
