Scientists Find All Five Genetic Building Blocks for Life in Asteroid Ryugu

Researchers are still studying samples of asteroid Ryugu collected by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency from its Hayabusa2 mission in 2020. After the first papers focused on the composition of the recovered material, a Japanese team has now found a "complete" set of genetic bases belonging to both DNA and RNA.

The recently published study explains that asteroids are already known for their "seeding" role in the emergence of life throughout the universe. Organic molecules delivered by these extraterrestrial bodies have played a key role in bringing the building blocks of life to Earth, and Ryugu is once again suggesting that the so-called panspermia hypothesis may be true.

The researchers have discovered all five "canonical" nucleotides in Ryugu samples: adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine for DNA, uracil for RNA. Traces of RNA bases were already discovered in 2023.

Both DNA and RNA play crucial roles in Earth's lifeforms, storing the instructions for their development while functioning and acting as messengers for turning these instructions into actual protein production inside cells.

The new study confirms that carbonaceous (C-Type) asteroids played an important part in changing Earth's prebiotic chemical soup that gave rise to life on Earth.

Engineer Says It’s Time to Rebuild the Twin Towers With Giant Data Centers

After their grisly destruction in a terror attack in 2001 – and the chaotic and deadly wars that followed – it can be hard to remember that the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, originally completed in 1973, were architecturally controversial for their impact on the Manhattan skyline.

Now, a long-shot effort seeks to rebuild them in an unlikely locale: Chicago, where they’d be reborn as massive computing laboratories and data centers.

The project, called the World Tech Center, envisions nine buildings across a 35-acre campus in the Windy City’s downtown. The new Twin Towers, reconceptualized for the 21st century, would get plenty of upgrades to make them “substantially safer than their predecessors.”

These upgrades include a meter-thick central core crafted from ultra-high-performance concrete, fireproof steel I-beams, tuned mass dampers each full of 1,000-tonnes of water, foam fire-suppression systems, pressurized stairwells, a dedicated fire department, and a firefighting drone launch pad.

Perhaps the most sci-fi improvement would be an “aerial threat detection and neutralization system" described as having a radar system, radio and communications sensors, and a “last resort anti-aircraft surface-to-air missiles or a multi-megawatt laser defense weapon.”

Bitcoin Rises After Trump Points To Delay in Iran Strikes

Bitcoin rose along with Treasuries and stock futures after U.S. President Donald Trump said he’d postpone strikes on Iranian energy power plants and energy infrastructure for five days.

The biggest cryptocurrency advanced as much as 5.2% and traded at around $71,400 on Monday morning in New York. Smaller tokens including Ether and Solana also rose.

Bitcoin had earlier been fluctuating around a two-week low, sliding as far as $67,371 – its lowest level since March 9 – in Asia trading. The token has been volatile since the conflict in Iran began in late February, at one point jumping to a high of nearly $76,000 before tumbling once more as tensions in the region escalated.

“Geopolitical news has been a strong influence, dispelling the gloom of recent days,” said Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro.

Stocks and bonds rebounded following Trump’s comments that the U.S. and Iran had “very good” conversations about an end to the war. While Trump’s announcement initially caused stocks to spike, the gains were quickly trimmed after Iran’s media denied any contact. The S&P 500 opened trading up 1.5%, while Brent fell about 8% below $103 a barrel.
