China’s New 2D Transistor Could Soon Be Used To Make the World’s Fastest Processors

Researchers in China say they have created a new silicon-free transistor that could significantly boost performance while reducing energy consumption. The team says this development represents a new direction for transistor research.

The scientists said that the new transistor could be integrated into chips that could one day perform up to 40% faster than the best existing silicon processors made by U.S. companies like Intel. Despite that dramatic increase in power, the researchers claim that such chips would also draw 10% less power.

The efficiency and performance gains are possible thanks to the chip's unique architecture, the scientists said in the paper, specifically the new two-dimensional silicon-free transistor they created. This transistor is a gate-all-around field-effect transistor (GAAFET).

Should this transistor be fitted into a chip that does prove faster than U.S.-made chips by Intel and other companies, it could also allow China to sidestep current restrictions on buying advanced chips and tap into U.S. chip-making by shifting to a wholly different manufacturing process.

Coca-Cola’s New Hydrogen-Powered Vending Machine Doesn’t Need a Power Outlet

Coca-Cola is installing what the company claims to be the world’s first hydrogen-powered vending machines at the World Expo 2025, which will open to the public in Osaka, Japan, on April 13th, 2025. 

Co-developed by Fuji Electric, the machines don’t need access to a power outlet and instead rely on replaceable hydrogen cartridges to fuel a chemical reaction that generates electricity, as spotted by SoraNews24.

The new vending machines have a slightly larger footprint thanks to an additional generator module on the side. That’s where the hydrogen cartridges are installed, and where the chemical reaction between the hydrogen and oxygen takes place, generating power that’s stored in a battery.

Coca-Cola hasn’t shared specifics on how long the vending machines can be powered before their hydrogen cartridges need to be replaced. Cutting the power cord potentially allows these new machines to be installed almost anywhere, but the company will still need relatively easy access for regular maintenance. Even if the hydrogen fuel cell lasts for weeks, the vending machine’s stock of Coca-Cola and other drinks may not.

The DOJ Still Wants Google to Sell Off Chrome

Although the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has dropped its AI divestiture proposal for Google, which could’ve seen the tech giant forced to sell off its AI investments (including a multibillion-dollar stake in Anthropic), the company still faces an uncertain future over its Chrome browser.

The DOJ continues to seek a court order for Google to sell off its popular browser as part of a broader effort to address its alleged search market monopoly. It has the backing of 38 state attorneys general in its bid to split up Google from its popular Chrome browser, which accounts for two-thirds (66.3%) of all browser sessions globally.

Google has sought to reach an agreement that would see it loosen its exclusivity and default search engine deals with the likes of Apple. It is unclear how successful that argument was in the eyes of the court.

In positive news, the DOJ has loosened its stance on Google’s ownership of Android, the mobile operating system that accounts for nearly three-quarters (72%) of the global smartphone market.
