American startups are increasingly building their apps on top of free Chinese AI models and the shift is happening far faster than Silicon Valley wants to admit. 

Once considered second-rate, open Chinese systems like DeepSeek and Qwen are now matching U.S. capabilities at a fraction of the cost. Founders say the economics are impossible to ignore, even as political and security concerns mount.

 Inside the industry, some now warn that America’s closed-model strategy may be ceding the open frontier entirely to Beijing.
