Government Using Tech To Predict Possible Murderers: 'Chilling and Dystopian'

The British Government has reportedly launched a new "murder prediction" tool that uses data from a number of sources to estimate the likelihood an individual will commit murder.

Advances in AI give governments and law enforcement agencies the power to analyze crime through increasingly complex models that incorporate a range of demographic factors. Advocates say this could help tackle crime whilst critics have raised concerns about data privacy and about models potentially discriminating against certain groups.

Sofia Lyall, a Statewatch researcher, said: "The Ministry of Justice's attempt to build this murder prediction system is the latest chilling and dystopian example of the government's intent to develop so-called crime 'prediction' systems. Time and again, research shows that algorithmic systems for 'predicting' crime are inherently flawed.

The British government insists the program is currently being used for research only, but if it proves a success, there will be pressure to deploy it nationwide. Further advances in AI capabilities will allow authorities to develop more complex models predicting crime, which could have implications for civil liberties.

Trump Is Just Harding With WiFi

President Warren G. Harding was basically Trump’s ghostwriter. Let me explain…

In 1921, America's inflation was roaring. Its debt was unpayable. The country had just gotten over a war and a pandemic. The cities were swollen with the unemployed. Wall Street wanted easy money. Europe wanted U.S. guarantees. The League of Nations beckoned. The press and academia were firmly on Team Globe.

Enter Harding, who campaigned on tariffs as weapons of sovereignty, industrial independence as a matter of national security, and a deep distrust of global entanglements, utopian global governance pushers, and transnational saviors. His slogan? “Return to Normalcy.”

Once in office, he slashed spending by 50%, cut top tax rates, fired waves of federal workers, and let the market chew through the wreckage of war and inflation. And just like that, the economy boomed. America roared into the '20s. America exploded with innovation. Electrification. Radio. Automobiles.

Fast forward to today and we see so many parallels. Only our version's boom will be defined by Crypto, AI, robotics, automated manufacturing, and new forms of energy. The tools have changed, but the arc remains the same.

Heads Up on AMZN

After I published my Perfect Portfolio, a sharp-eyed reader emailed me with a fair question: “Why no Amazon?”

I’m a fan of Amazon. I use it. And I’m extremely bullish on its cloud division, AWS, which is arguably one of the most important business units in the entire global economy. But there’s a reason Amazon didn’t make the cut…

It comes down to a blend of macro risk, valuation, and what I believe is one of the most misunderstood and undervalued assets in the world: Alphabet’s Waymo. I believe Waymo is one of the most undervalued assets in the world. I’ve ridden in a few now. It’s not a demo. It’s not a gimmick. It works.

If Waymo reaches scale and profitability, it could unlock hundreds of billions of dollars in value. It’s like Alphabet is hiding a future transportation company inside its balance sheet – and the market hasn’t priced it in.
