Did SK Hynix’s Record $42 Billion Q2 Profit Just Prove the Memory Boom Went Bust?

Recently IPO'd SK Hynix (NASDAQ: SKHY) reported second-quarter operating income of $42 billion, a 557% increase from the year-ago period. Revenue climbed 257% year over year, reflecting booming demand for AI memory and continued shortages across the HBM market.

Those are extraordinary numbers by any historical standard. Yet Wall Street wasn't comparing SK Hynix to last year. It was comparing the company to expectations that had grown even faster.

Analysts expected even stronger profitability after months of rising HBM prices and insatiable AI infrastructure spending. Instead, SK Hynix's record results suggested pricing momentum may already be beginning to normalize.

The problem isn't SK Hynix's execution. It's the market's growing concern that memory remains one of technology's most cyclical businesses.

Unlike Nvidia, whose software ecosystem creates sticky customer relationships, memory chips remain largely commodity products. When supply tightens, prices soar. When additional capacity enters the market, pricing often falls much faster than demand.

That's exactly what investors are beginning to fear. Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU), SK Hynix, and Sandisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) have all sold off sharply in recent weeks as concerns spread that today's AI memory shortage could eventually become tomorrow's oversupply.

U.S. Prosecutors Charge Atlanta Man After GrapheneOS Phone Wipes Itself During Airport Search

A federal case in Atlanta is raising questions about a privacy-focused mobile operating system, with prosecutors at the U.S. Department of Justice arguing that it was used to erase evidence.

The case centers on Atlanta resident and now defendant Sam Tunick's use of GrapheneOS, an open-source operating system that works on Google Pixel phones and lets users enter a passcode to wipe a device clean.

The incident began at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on January 24 of last year. Tunick had returned from a trip to the Dominican Republic when he was stopped for questioning regarding his association with the movement against Cop City. According to a motion filed by the defense, agents did not present a warrant or read him his rights.

During the questioning, agents repeatedly asked Tunick to unlock his phone and warned they would seize it if he refused. When he provided a passcode, the phone wiped itself.

Prosecutors are treating the wipe as an intentional act to destroy evidence, while the defense argues that the search violated Tunick's constitutional rights and that the evidence should be suppressed.

The case raises questions about which constitutional rights apply at U.S. borders. A judge is not expected to rule on the defense motion until at least late October.

Private Claude Chats Were Showing Up in Google Search Results

Reddit users discovered that links to chats with Anthropic's Claude AI chatbot were searchable online. Apparently a Google search for claude.ai using the "site:" operator would produce hundreds of links to chats with Claude where the user had opted to share a link.

We tried this on Tuesday and it no longer appears to work. But last weekend, links to chats with all manner of searches, some silly and some with sensitive information included, had been indexed by search engines, making them widely available online.

Claude chats have a "share" button in the upper right corner of each page – but it may not have been clear that by creating that link, the chat could be indexed by search engines like Google.

The issue likely stemmed from Anthropic not including "noindex" tags, a piece of code that instructs search engines not to show a particular page in its search results. And even though the search results discovered by Reddit aren't displaying in Google's search results now, without the noindex tag, the results could surface in search results again in the future.

To disabled shared chats in Claude, go to the privacy settings for shared chats and click "manage" (settings > privacy > shared chats > manage).
