Number of AI Chatbots Ignoring Human Instructions Increasing, Study Says

AI models that lie and cheat appear to be growing in number with reports of deceptive scheming surging in the last six months, a study into the technology has found.

AI chatbots and agents disregarded direct instructions, evaded safeguards and deceived humans and other AI, according to research funded by the UK government-funded AI Security Institute (AISI). The study identified nearly 700 real-world cases of AI scheming and charted a five-fold rise in misbehaviour between October and March, with some AI models destroying emails and other files without permission.

In one example, an AI agent instructed not to change computer code "spawned" another agent to do it instead. Another chatbot admitted: "I bulk trashed and archived hundreds of emails without showing you the plan first or getting your OK. That was wrong – it directly broke the rule you'd set."

The snapshot of scheming by AI agents "in the wild", as opposed to in laboratory conditions, has sparked fresh calls for international monitoring of the increasingly capable models and come as Silicon Valley companies aggressively promote the technology as economically transformative.

Six Straight Months of Losses? Five Things To Know in Bitcoin This Week

Bitcoin faced last-minute selling into Sunday's weekly close, dropping to $65,000 before a modest rebound. It rose to roughly $68,000 on Monday before paring gains, with traders still firmly risk-off on the short-term outlook.

Macro markets remain highly sensitive to developments in the U.S.-Iran war, and these keep coming as April arrives. U.S. President Donald Trump reported a "big day" militarily to start the week amid reports of plans for a ground invasion of Iran.

Crypto markets joined stocks in a comedown in late March as the odds of the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates in 2026 faded. At the same time, bets of a recession coming this year increased to their highest since last September.

If Bitcoin ends March lower than its starting price, it would mark the first six straight "red" months since the 2018 bear market.

Eli Lilly Reaches $2.75 Billion Deal With Insilico To Bring AI-Developed Drugs to the Global Market

U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly has reached a $2.75 billion deal to bring drugs developed using AI by Hong Kong-based Insilico Medicine to the global market.

The agreement will give Insilico $115 million up front, with the remainder subject to regulatory and commercial milestones, along with royalties on future sales, according to the companies' announcement Monday.

Insilico has developed at least 28 drugs using generative AI tools, with nearly half already at a clinical stage, Alex Zhavoronkov, founder and CEO of Insilico, told CNBC. The company went public in Hong Kong in December. Its shares are up more than 50% year-to-date.

The two companies have worked together since signing an AI-based software licensing agreement in 2023.

"This collaboration allows us to explore novel mechanisms and accelerate the identification of promising therapeutic candidates across multiple disease areas," Andrew Adams, group vice president of Molecule Discovery at Lilly, said in a statement. He called Insilico's AI-enabled discovery "a powerful complement" to Lilly's clinical development.
